American Mardy Fish says it was his decision to opt out of the upcoming U.S. Davis Cup tie against Chile. Fish, who led the team to a World Group qualifying win over Columbia, said that a thyroid condition that made him withdraw from the tournament in San Jose convinced him to pull out of Davis Cup, even though now he feels recovered.

"It's a tough situation for everyone because everyone knows I want to play," Fish said. "I've put in a lot of work to be on the team. You don't get many chances to play Davis Cup, but we made the decision 10 or 14 days ago to not go. And 10 to 14 days ago, to be honest, I felt terrible. I didn't know how long it was going to be (to recover). But I've come a long way in a short time with my health."—Matthew Cronin
