Still struggling with heart problems that forced him to pull out of his match against Roger Federer at the U.S. Open and sidelined him for part of the spring and early summer, Mardy Fish has been forced to end his season. The ATP confirmed to TENNIS.com that Fish has pulled out of next week’s tournament in Basel as well the Bercy/Paris Masters, which begins on October 29 and would have been his last event of 2012.
When Fish pulled out before his fourth-round match against Federer in New York, the American said it was for “precautionary measures” on doctor’s advice. A source told TENNIS.com at the time that the night before the match, Fish couldn’t sleep because of an accelerated heartbeat.
The 30-year-old underwent a heart procedure in Los Angeles on May 23 in an attempt to resolve a form of arrhythmia. Fish has said that he frequently wears a heart monitor when he goes to sleep, as it puts him mentally at ease. After Fish lost to Juan Monaco in Miami last March, he said his heart was racing so fast while laying in bed that he felt he “was going to die.”
On Thursday, Rafael Nadal tweeted: “All my support to the great @MardyFish! I hope you get better soon!” Fish is currently ranked No. 26.
