Five Fast Facts: Diving into the Belgium vs. Australia Davis Cup semi

BRUSSELS, Belgium—Two of the ATP tour’s biggest stars—David Goffin and Nick Kyrgios—will collide as Belgium faces Australia in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas semifinals this weekend.

1. Goffin lifts his game when it comes to Davis Cup: The Belgian has a 17-6 overall record in Davis Cup action, but if you take out his 0-3 record in doubles, then he’s actually 17-3—he has also won 13 of his last 14 singles matches, the only loss in that stretch coming to Andy Murray in the 2015 Davis Cup final.

2. Kyrgios gets up for Davis Cup, too: The Australian has only been playing in the Davis Cup since 2013, but he’s already put together a 7-4 career record, which includes 7-3 in singles—and he’s won the last four rubbers he’s played in straight sets, including wins over John Isner and Sam Querrey this year.

In his pre-semifinal interview, Kyrgios said the Davis Cup has done wonders for him in 2017:

Belgium has the home advantage: Goffin, Steve Darcis, Ruben Bemelmans and Arthur De Greef will host Kyrgios, Jordan Thompson, Thanasi Kokkinakis and John Peers on the indoor clay of Palais 12 in Brussels, which obviously gives Belgium a home-crowd advantage. The team has also won its past two ties with Australia, in the World Group first round in 2007 and World Group playoffs in 2010.

The Belgians are going to give it everything in this year’s semifinals, too, according to Goffin:

4. Kyrgios has the head-to-head advantage, though: When the teams’ No. 1 singles players clash this weekend, Kyrgios will go in with a major advantage—he’s 3-0 lifetime against Goffin, and all three of those meetings have come within the last year, including a pair of straight-set wins this year.

Kyrgios has never played Darcis, though, and Goffin has never played Thompson, either.

5. Only one country has won more Davis Cups than Australia: That would be the United States with 32—Australia isn’t too far behind with 28, though. Great Britain is a distant third with 10 Davis Cups.

Belgium’s best Davis Cup finishes are two finals in 1904 and 2015 (falling to the Brits both times).
