It's been nearly a week since America—or the wide world of music and love, period—lost The Voice. Whitney Houston's tragic, too-soon passing has been written about everywhere. Here, as it's been shared in numerous blog posts this week, is Houston singing her hit "One Moment in Time," an anthem of courage and strength that she herself embodied, at the 1997 opening ceremony for Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York:

My own favorite parts of this clip: Seeing former precocious teen queen Tracy Austin mouthing the words to the performance, and also, at the five-minute mark, the sight of Monica Seles and Steffi Graf standing beside one another, coupled with the sound of that voice. Anyone who's not stirred by this scene should check his pulse.

By this time, Whitney's perfect vocal instrument may have already become ravaged by drugs and abuse from her husband, Bobby Brown. But her spirit was not broken. There was much feeling in that performance. And it's quite stirring also to see the lineup of all-time greats—Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Boris Becker, and more—who witnessed that performance live. No doubt each of them reflected on it in recent days after receiving word of that all-time diva's death.

Let's remember Whitney this way. Let's remember all of the greats like this.
