SANTIAGO, Chile (AP)—Seventh-seeded Fabio Fognini beat defending champion Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (0) on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Movistar Open.
Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo kept rolling in his strong start to the season, defeating fourth-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina 6-4, 6-3. The eighth-seeded Giraldo, who has reached at least the quarterfinals of three events this year, improved to 9-3 on the season. He converted four of 10 break points.
Also, fifth-seeded Potito Starace of Italy overcame Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 6-7 (9), 6-3, 7-6 (2), and sixth-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain defeated Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina 6-3, 6-1.
In Saturday’s semifinals, Starace will face Giraldo and Fognini will take on Robredo.
