Former champion Del Potro pulls out of US Open with knee injury

Juan Martin del Potro has pulled out the US Open. The 2009 US Open champion reached the final last season, falling to Novak Djokovic in three sets.

The world No. 12-ranked Argentine hasn’t played since undergoing knee surgery after refracturing his right kneecap at Queen’s Club in June.

Last October in Shangai, the 30-year-old initially suffered the same injury, which forced him to end his season early and skip the Australian Open. He has only played five tournaments this season, pulling out of Wimbledon, Rogers Cup, Cincinnati and now, the US Open.

Del Potro will be replaced in the draw at the Flushing Meadows by American Denis Kudla, who had previously received a wild card into the event. In turn, compatriot Christopher Eubanks has been given Kudla’s wild card spot.

The US Open starts on August 26.
