The recently retired 37-year-old Spaniard won 27 titles, including the 2012 Paris ATP Masters 1000 trophy during his 19 years on the tour.

David Ferrer is the new tournament director of Barcelona, organizers have announced.

The recently retired ATP player from Spain will be a familiar face in charge of the event, having competed there regularly during his career and been a four-time finalist.

"Assuming the sporting direction of the Banc Sabadell Barcelona Open, an unimaginable achievement years ago, is a great and exciting challenge," said the former Grand Slam finalist, adding that he will be aiming to bring his playing experiences to the existing "deep tradition and extraordinary development of the event."

Ferrer, who also has two tennis academies in Valencia, will take the position previously held by Albert Costa, who is now involved in the running of the Davis Cup. A Top 10 regular during his career, Ferrer has also been invited to participate in captaining Spain by Davis Cup captain, Sergi Bruguera.

Ferrer reached a career-high No.3 in the rankings.
