It’s a big week for American tennis.

First of all, Frances Tiafoe rises from No. 27 to No. 20 after a banner week in Cincinnati, where he reached his first Masters 1000 final—the biggest final of his career. And though he wasn’t able to come away with the title, finishing runner-up to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, Tiafoe’s return to the Top 20 as a result is a big deal.

With Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul and Sebastian Korda already in the elite, this is the first time there are five American men in the Top 20 since the week of February 24th, 1997, which just happens to be before any of them were even born.

AMERICAN MEN IN CURRENT ATP TOP 20 (week of Aug. 19, 2024):
No. 12 Taylor Fritz [born in Oct. 1997]
No. 13 Ben Shelton [born in Oct. 2002]
No. 14 Tommy Paul [born in May 1997]
No. 16 Sebastian Korda [born in July 2000]
No. 20 Frances Tiafoe [born in Jan. 1998]

LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED (week of Feb. 24, 1997):
No. 1 Pete Sampras
No. 3 Michael Chang
No. 13 Andre Agassi
No. 15 Todd Martin
No. 18 Jim Courier

Incidentally, there are also five American women in the Top 20 this week: Coco Gauff (No. 3), Jessica Pegula (No. 6), Danielle Collins (No. 11), Emma Navarro (No. 13) and Madison Keys (No. 14).

Tiafoe reached a career-high of No. 10 last summer.

Speaking of Americans on the WTA rankings, there’s another big breakthrough, as Taylor Townsend makes her Top 50 debut today, rising from No. 51 to No. 46 after qualifying and making it all the way to the third round in Cincinnati, falling to eventual finalist Pegula.

That comes a week after she qualified and made it all the way to the quarterfinals in Toronto—her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal. She jumped 20 spots from No. 71 to No. 51 after that run in Canada.

Townsend is now one of three moms currently in the Top 50, joining No. 20-ranked Victoria Azarenka and No. 28-ranked Elina Svitolina.
