ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) Philipp Petzschner lifted Germany into the Davis Cup quarterfinals Sunday, defeating Croatia's Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) in the decisive match of their first-round series.
Karlovic set the record for the world's fastest serve during the doubles match on Saturday, but couldn't hold on to his serve in the opening game of the first set, and then during the two tiebreakers.
Earlier, Marin Cilic gave Croatia a hope of qualifying by beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (6) to even the series at 2-2.
Cilic converted five of 12 break points, and lost his serve only once while leading 2-0 in the third set. Kohlschreiber trailed 7-6 in the third set tiebreaker, hitting an easy volley out.
