Grigor Dimitrov has defeated Hubert Hurkacz in the fourth round of Roland Garros, 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (3), to reach the quarterfinals of the clay court Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

And with that, he now completes his career set of Grand Slam quarterfinals, having already gone this far at every other major.

DIMITROV’S BEST RESULTS BY GRAND SLAM:

  • SFs of Australian Open [2017]
  • QFs of Roland Garros [2024]
  • SFs of Wimbledon [2014]
  • SFs of US Open [2019]

And there’s even more.

Earlier this year he reached the quarterfinals of Miami for the first time, completing his career set of Masters 1000 quarterfinals, and he's now one of only two men born in 1990 or later to have completed both career sets, alongside Daniil Medvedev.

While Roland Garros was the last piece of the puzzle missing for Dimitrov, Madrid was the last one missing for Medvedev, and he reached the quarterfinals in the Spanish capital last month.

Dimitrov had beaten Hurkacz in all five of their previous career meetings and he was never in too much trouble in this one, dropping serve just once—when he was already up a break in the third set, with a two-sets-to-love lead already under his belt.

Both players finished the match with a positive winners-to-unforced errors differential, Dimitrov 38 to 28 and Hurkacz 48 to 43, but in the end it was all about the big points, with the Bulgarian coming out strong in both tie-breaks, as well as converting two of eight break point opportunities in the match (and Hurkacz one of seven).

Dimitrov is now 6-0 in his career against Hurkacz, his most dominant undefeated head-to-head record against anyone.

“It’s very hard to play against such a good friend. I’ve known Hubi for quite a few years—we practice a lot, we share quite a few moments together,” Dimitrov said. “I knew it was going to be a difficult match, but I knew I also had to fight a lot, and I was really counting on [the crowd], on my body and everything that was surrounding me.

“Roland Garros was the only Slam that I felt I could never get to that extra step, but today, 15 years later, I made it. So I’m very happy.”
