We’re only on Day 1 of 2024 and Novak Djokovic has already made more history: by continuing his reign at No. 1 on the January 1st, 2024 rankings, Djokovic has now been ranked No. 1 at some point in 13 different years in his career, raising the bar on his own record.

He tied Rafael Nadal’s previous record of being No. 1 in 10 different years in 2021, surpassed it with his 11th in 2022, increased it with his 12th in 2023 and now starts really pulling away with his 13th in 2024.

Since first rising to the top spot on July 4th, 2011 after winning his first Wimbledon title, he’s been ranked No. 1 at some point in every year apart from 2017—that year he was ranked No. 2 for almost the entire first half of the year but then had to cut his season short after Wimbledon due to an elbow injury, finishing the year at No. 12.

He was back at No. 1 by the end of 2018, though.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion is spending his record-extending 406th career week at No. 1 on the ATP rankings this week as he kicks off his season at the United Cup. He led the Serbian team to victory against China in their first tie of the event on Sunday.
