MUNICH(AP) Lleyton Hewitt overcame a slow start to beat Dutch qualifier Thiemo De Bakker 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday and joined fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals of the BMW Open.

Berdych rallied to beat Germany's Andreas Beck 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Hewitt, a former No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam winner who is coming back from a hip injury, dropped the first three games but won the next six against a player who qualified for only his second tournament this year.

Hewitt, a wild-card entry, wasted a match point at 5-3 in the second but served out the match in the next game. He next plays Berdych in the last eight.

The Czech squandered two match points at 5-2 in the third and was forced to go into the tiebreaker before fending off the big-serving German left-hander.

In other second-round matches Thursday, German wild card Daniel Brands upset Julien Benneteau of France 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (6). Potito Starace defeated Italian rival Simone Bolelli 6-4, 7-6 (5) and will next play Brands.
