Lleyton Hewitt is working with fellow Australian Nick Kyrgios, but is not officially coaching him.
"He's definitely not my coach," said Kyrgios, who agreed that mentoring was a better description. "But he's definitely helping me. He's taking time from his own career and family to come here and help me. That's really good to have that person that I can sort of ask questions and lead me in the right direction. I think that's really good."
Just before Wimbledon, the 20-year-old stopped working with coach Todd Larkham and has not named a new coach. The 34-year-old Hewitt is still playing but he will retire after the 2016 Australian Open. He will play in the U.S. Open.
Hewitt has been friendly with the No. 41-ranked Kyrgios over the past few years, helping him most often at Davis Cup, where Australia has reached the semifinals. The two-time Grand Slam champion watched Kyrgios play Fernando Verdasco in Montreal.
Kyrgios' mother told the Canberra Times that her son would listen to Hewitt because of his accomplishments. "What Nick doesn't like is when people who haven't been in that situation give him advice, but he'll listen to someone like Lleyton."
Hewitt is also is friendly with Bernard Tomic.
