Holger Rune has become the latest big name to announce his withdrawal from the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, taking to social media on Wednesday to share the disappointing update with fans.

Rune, ranked No. 16 and a two-time Roland Garros quarterfinalist, was set to represent Denmark before a lingering bone bruise in his left wrist derailed his plans.

“I am really sorry that I will be unable to play the Olympics. It's something I've been looking forward to playing and being a part of,” Rune shared in English.

“I have played with pain in my wrist throughout both the clay and grass season, so I have to take the medical recommendations seriously.”

Rune had recently pulled out of a warm-up event at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag in hopes of resting his wrist after exams revealed it was “not looking good”. The week prior, he retired from his quarterfinal in Hamburg due to a knee injury.

“I will follow the Olympics from home and cheer on all the Danish athletes and I hope and believe that we can bring home many medals from Paris. Come on, Denmark!” Rune added.

The withdrawal takes him out of the singles competition, delaying his Olympic debut after also narrowly missing out on qualifying for a spot in the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

Rune was also entered in mixed doubles with Caroline Wozniacki, with the pair being the top alternate team in the event of a withdrawal.

The former world No 4 is next scheduled to compete at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers in Montreal, which kicks off on August 6.
