Iga Swiatek continued her dominant run at the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open, rolling past Sara Sorribes Tormo, 6-1, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals.

"I'm really happy," Swiatek said on court. "I've played some solid matches here, so I'm happy to get the win today, especially because Sara is a tricky opponent. But I felt from the beginning that I have many options and that I could adjust. I'm happy with the performance."

The top seed has dropped just eight games through her first three matches and made quick work of the in-form home favorite in 67 minutes on Manolo Santana Stadium.

A former world No. 32, Sorribes Tormo is a former quarterfinalist in Madrid and no stranger to battling through long matches: it took her two hours and 51 minutes to defeat Victoria Azarenka in the third round. When she broke Swiatek to start the match, fans may have thought the world No. 1 was in for a similarly long day.

But the 2023 finalist was emphatic in her response and broke straight back. Matching Sorribes Tormo's reliable topspin with her own, Swiatek reeled off a total of 12 games to pull off a moral double bagel and roll into the last eight—clinching the contest with an aggressive approach to net and a swinging backhand volley.

In total Swiatek struck a stunning 27 winners to just 14 unforced errors and converted six of nine break point opportunities, while not allowing Sorribes Tormo more than that single break point from the opening game.

Waiting for Swiatek in the quarterfinals is No. 11 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, who pulled off a 6-4, 6-4 upset over No. 5 seed Maria Sakkari. Haddad Maia won their first meeting on hard courts in 2022, but Swiatek avenged the defeat last spring at Roland Garros, where the two met in the semifinals.

"Honestly, I haven't watched her matches lately, so tactically, my coach is going to help me analyze. But we've played plenty of tough matches against each other, so it's not going to be easy. She's always a really intense player and she knows how to play on clay, so I'll focus on myself and I'll be ready."

2022 Madrid champ Ons Jabeur also eased into the quarters on Monday: the No. 8 seed knocked out No. 9 seed Jelena Ostapenko, 6-0, 6-4 and awaits the winner of the all-American fourth round between Madison Keys and Coco Gauff.
