Iga Swiatek named Polish Sports Personality of the Year

The awards keep coming for Iga Swiatek as a result of her historic 2022 season. The world No. 1 was named the Polish Sports Personality of the Year, a top honor in her home country, on Saturday, the first tennis player to win the award in nearly a century.

Swiatek topped a ballot that included star soccer player Robert Lewandowski; golfer Adrian Meronk, who last year became the first Polish player to win a title on the European Tour; her fellow tennis player Hubert Hurkacz; and basketball player Mateusz Ponitka.

Swiatek is just the second tennis player in the award's history to win the honor, joining Jadwiga Jedrzejowska who won the award in 1936 and 1937.

The award dates back to 1926, but was not awarded from 1939–47 during World War II. Swiatek is also just the second woman to win the award since 2014, the year after cross-country skiier Justyna Kowalczyk was crowned with the last of her five consecutive awards.

Swiatek's achievements last year are well-documented: She won two Grand Slams at Roland Garros and the US Open, six other titles, and posted a tour-leading 67-9 win-loss record. That included 37 consecutive wins from February to June, the longest winning streak on the WTA this century. She was also named WTA Player of the Year and ITF World Champion, as well as the European Sportsperson of the Year by the Polish Press Agency.

Unable to attend the awards in person, Swiatek posted a message to social media thanking all those who supported her over the last 12 months.

After leading Poland to the semifinals of the United Cup, Swiatek withdrew from this week's Adelaide International 2 with a right shoulder injury.

She'll look to win her fourth career major title at the Australian Open, which begins Jan. 16.
