Iga Swiatek battled past Naomi Osaka in a thriller of a second-round match at Roland Garros on Wednesday, coming back from 5-2 down in the third set—and saving a match point down 5-3—to edge her fellow four-time Grand Slam champion, 7-6 (1), 1-6, 7-5.

And with the win, Swiatek achieved a lot:

It’s the first time she’s saved match point to win a match at Roland Garros. And not only did she save that match point down 5-3, she was also two points from losing down 5-2 and 5-4.

She’s now 20-0 against players ranked outside the Top 100 at Grand Slams. Osaka, who’s currently ranked No. 134 as she works her way back up, isn’t your typical non-Top 100 player, but still.

She’s now won her last 32 matches in a row against players ranked outside the Top 100, period. Her last loss to a non-Top 100 player came against a No. 338-ranked Ana Konjuh in Miami in 2021.

She’s now 28-0 in her career at Roland Garros after winning the first set. Osaka came the closest to ending that perfect record.

She’s also still the only tennis player, female or male, to reach the third round or better at every single Grand Slam event this decade. That’s all 17 beginning with the 2020 Australian Open. Novak Djokovic probably would have done it on the men’s side had he not missed the two hard-court majors in 2022.

Swiatek improved to 2-1 in the pair's head-to-head series, with Wednesday's clash marking their first away from hard courts.

And there’s more.

Her victory over Osaka was her 40th win of the year. That’s more than any other woman or man this year.

It was also her 30th career win at Roland Garros. She's now 30-2 in Paris, the only losses coming to Simona Halep in the fourth round in 2019 and to Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals in 2021.

She’s now won her last 14 matches in a row on the tour. She went 12-0 to sweep back-to-back WTA 1000 lead-up titles in Madrid and Rome and she’s 2-0 so far at Roland Garros.

She’s now won her last 16 matches in a row at Roland Garros. She went 14-0 to lift the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen the last two years, and she’s 2-0 here so far on the terre battue this year.

And finally, she’s the third-youngest woman to have that long a winning streak at Roland Garros in the Open Era. Only Steffi Graf and Monica Seles were younger when they hit 16 wins in a row here.
