Djokovic survived Federer, the fans, and a case of the shakes to win his 21st Masters title and his fourth in Indian Wells.

Fabio Fognini was as animated as ever in the doubles final, where he and partner Simone Bolelli, the Australian Open champions, lost to Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock.

Whatever Fabio was doing here, his girlfriend, Flavia Pennetta, tried her best not to watch.

Pospisil (left) and Sock won their third doubles title together. “We came out on fire,” Sock said.

Jelena Jankovic also came out on fire, and as spry as a teenager, in her singles final with Simona Halep.

But JJ couldn’t quite cross the finish line. Her coach, Chip Brooks, tried to keep her positive, but Jankovic didn’t want to hear it.

Simona Halep might make Rafael Nadal wonder if he’s whipping his racquet around far enough on his forehand.

Halep said she “didn’t play, like, good tennis, but I wanted to fight until the end.” She fought her way to a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory and the biggest title of her career.

Jankovic, after getting her frustrations out on her coach, and herself, during the match, accepted defeat in her usual fashion: with a smile.

The crowd for the men’s final heavily favored Federer, but here the two players’ fans seemed to co-exist in peace.

Federer had won the first set in their last five meetings, but this time it was Djokovic who started in full flight. He was nearly flawless through the first set and a half.

Federer, after controlling the action in his last two matches, was a step and a shot behind in this one.

But he managed to give the crowd a thrill by coming back to win the second set.

...while Djokovic couldn’t quite bring himself to bite it.

Later, though, he bit down on some cake to celebrate his 50th ATP title with his physio Sasa Jezdic. Just as sweet, Novak joked later, was the fact that it put him one ahead of his coach, Boris Becker.
