In yet another Grand Slam letdown, world No. 5 Alexander Zverev fell victim to world No. 124 Jiri Vesely in the first round of Wimbledon, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.

Zverev, who spent the majority of the last three years ranked inside the ATP’s Top-5, has never made it past the quarterfinal round of a major. Despite the first-round exit, Zverev will remain at No. 5 in the world.

Far removed from his career-best ranking of No. 35, Vesely spent most of his time in 2019 competing on the ATP’s Challenger Tour. While grass may be the big serving Czech’s best surface, this result is still a surprise and begs the question, what is wrong with Zverev?

In tennis, confidence is the only thing that really matters, and right now, Zverev has none.

Zverev cited personal reasons as a possible explanation to his disappointing performance. "Everything that happens outside the court affects you," Zverev said. "In the last two days, I would say are very rough for me personally."

Zverev declined to comment on any specifics regarding his personal life, but noted, "I have to fix that to play well on the court."

Vesely will face off against clay-court specialist Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay in the second round.
