India to play Davis Cup tie in Pakistan for first time since 1964

The Indian Davis Cup team appears to be planning to visit Pakistan for their scheduled zonal Davis Cup tie following the US Open.

The two countries were drawn to play against each other in Pakistan a few months ago but it was thrown into doubt following a terrorist attack that increased tensions in the subsequent weeks.

Now, with the ITF having given security approval for the tie, Indian officials have confirmed plans to play as scheduled.

"We will be going, and there is no difficulty in going to Pakistan to play," said Hironmoy Chatterjee, the Secretary General of the All-Indian Tennis Association, speaking to ANI.

Officials were careful to state that the tie is part of an international competition, scheduled by the Davis Cup structure, and not a 'bilateral' meeting between the two countries that would require government approval.

No Davis Cup tie between the two countries has been played in Pakistan since 1964, and no sporting event between the nations has been played in Pakistan since 2007.

Their previous Davis Cup meeting was in 2006 in Mumbai, won by India.

The winners will receive a spot in the playoffs for the World Group, the top level of the competition.
