Isner resuming full schedule in Newport following foot injury

John Isner is off and running again, resuming a full schedule following more than three months off with his foot injury.

The No. 15 fractured his foot during the Miami Open final and didn't return until Wimbledon. He fell in the second round of the grass-court Grand Slam.

That prompted him to take a wild card into Newport this week, in addition to playing Atlanta next week. Following a long layoff, he's happy to have a busy schedule.

"I hurt my bone," he was quoted as saying by the ATP. "Anytime I've had anything hurt I've been able to actively rehab it. This, you really can't do that that much; you have to just let your body heal itself."

That exacerbated the effects of the layoff, he added, saying, "I was pretty motionless for a long time," he said. "I don't think I hit a ball for 10 weeks, so I didn't start practicing until a week before Wimbledon. It's tough but I wasn't dwelling on it by any means. I've been very fortunate to be healthy. Injuries are a part of all sports, and tennis is no different."

Playing again this week is easier because he didn't have the change surfaces, even if the grass softer.

"I don't think it's that big of a change," he said. "Of course the grass isn't completely the same but it feels the same underneath your feet."

Isner is the top seed at Newport.
