As tennis is concerned, the headling match from first professional pickleball tournamen of the year—The Masters, in Palm Springs, Calif.—featured three former ATP players, and a former Top 10 college player.

Former Davis Cup teammates Donald Young and Jack Sock went head-to-head on the pickleball court with partners Travis Rettenmaier and Collin Shick, respectively.

Rettenmaier turned pro in tennis in 2002, eventually trading his racquet for a paddle by joining the PPA Tour in 2020. Shick was the only non-ATP player of the foursome, but he had a notable collegiate career for North Carolina State, where he went on to reach No. 6 in NCAA rankings and No. 27 in individual doubles rankings.

Fun fact: Shick was in medical school before bursting onto the pickleball scene in 2023.

Meeting in the round of 32, 14th seeds Rettenmaier and Young fought off 20th seeds Sock and Shick. After a sweeping 7-0 start in the second game, Rettenmaier and Young closed out the match, 11-6, 12-10.

Unfortunately for Young, this was his only win of the day. He lost in singles to No. 13 seed and former collegiate tennis player Roscoe Bellamy, 11-6, 11-6.

Sock faced a similar fate in mixed doubles with partner Genie Bouchard, losing to No. 13 seeds AJ Koller and Meghan Dizon in 41 minutes. While Koller has a recreational tennis background, Dizon competed collegiately before pickling professionally.

Although his doubles runs end in Palm Springs, Sock moved onto the round of 16 in singles, where he’ll face 5th seed Dylan Frazier. Bouchard also continues in singles, as her round-of-32 comeback from one game down against No. 21 seed Hannah Blatt sets her up against second seed Brooke Buckner.

Buckner played at the University of Michigan and was the assistant coach at the University of North Carolina, before claiming her No. 2 singles ranking on the PPA Tour.

The second day of play also saw world No. 1s Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns take the courts. Competing together, they cruised into the round of 16 in mixed doubles after an 11-2, 11-6 victory. Separately, they also moved on in their respective doubles events. In total, they spent a total of 88 minutes and three seconds on court.

Tyson McGuffin, of the *Making McGuffins* PickleballTV series, moves onto the round of 16 in both singles and mixed doubles.

Play continues on PickleballTV through Sunday, January 12. Watch live everyday starting at 4 pm ET.
