Jack Sock is set to become the No. 1 American man for the first time, moving up in the rankings after reaching the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals.
The 24-year-old was ranked No. 25, between fellow U.S. players Steve Johnson (No. 24) and John Isner (No. 26), but is projected to be No. 23 next week.
It’s been a solid season for Sock, who reached two ATP finals—in Auckland and Houston—and the fourth round of the U.S. Open. And although he lost in the quarterfinals to Gilles Simon, Sock won his first title of the season in Shanghai. He and Isner defeated Henri Kontinen and John Peers in the doubles final.
"I think, as everyone knows, I love everything about this country and playing for them," he said at Flushing Meadows, where he was the only American male to make it to the second week.
It will not be a career-high ranking for the Nebraska native. Sock was ranked 22nd back in January, but Isner was No. 11 at the time.
