Jannik Sinner becomes first man to win 70 matches in a season since Andy Murray in 2016

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner achieved a lot by winning the ATP Finals on Sunday—not only was he the first Italian and first player born in the 2000s to win the season-ending championships, he was the first player to win it without losing a set since Ivan Lendl in 1986.

The 23-year-old also became just the third player ever to win the Australian Open, US Open and ATP Finals in the same season, after Roger Federer (who did it three times in 2004, 2006 and 2007) and Novak Djokovic (who did it twice in 2015 and 2023).

But there was something particularly special about his 6-4, 6-4 victory over Taylor Fritz in the final—it was his 70th win of the year.

Sinner, who’s now 70-6 on the year, is the first man to win 70 matches in a single season since Andy Murray in 2016. The Brit won 78 matches that year, and like Sinner, was the year-end No. 1.

Sinner, who was born in 2001, is the first man born in 2000 or later—or even 1990 or later—to win 70 matches in a single season.

Before this, Djokovic—who was born on May 22nd, 1987—was the latest-born man to achieve the feat, doing it five times.

The last woman to win 70 matches in a single season was Serena Williams in 2013. She won 78 matches that year.

Sinner has the chance of piling on even more wins this season as he’s scheduled to compete in the Davis Cup Finals this week.
