Sinner will be the top seed for the first time at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, and is set to play his first match since being cleared of an anti-doping violation against American Alex Michelson. The 23-year-old Italian is the reigning Australian Open champion and is coming off winning his second Masters 1000 title of the season at the Cincinnati Open.

Defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic is the No. 2 seed, and hasn’t competed since capturing a long-awaited Olympic Gold medal in Paris earlier this month. The 24-time Grand Slam champion will begin his quest for a fifth US Open title against a qualifier, and is in the bottom half of the men’s draw alongside projected semifinal opponent and No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev.

Alcaraz is seeded third despite winning the last two major tournaments at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. The Spaniard won his first Grand Slam trophy at the US Open in 2022 and will also open against a qualifier with a possible second round against former Top 10 player Denis Shapovalov.

In the women’s draw, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka are in opposite halves of the draw, with Sabalenka coming in having just won the women’s event in Cincinnati. Sabalenka could face Gauff in the last four, but like Swiatek will open against a qualifier. The 2023 runner-up is in the same quarter of the draw as No. 7 seed Zheng Qinwen, who won Olympic gold in women’s singles.

Zheng has one of the more intriguing first rounds, drawing resurgent American Amanda Anisimova, a former Roland Garros semifinalist who reached the National Bank Open final two weeks ago with a win over Sabalenka. 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu drew No. 5 seed Jasmine Paolini, who has reached the last two Grand Slam finals in Paris and London.

In the men's draw, No. 11 seed Holger Rune faces an in-form American in Brandon Nakashima in his opening match, while 2020 champion Dominic Thiem will begin his final US Open against 2023 semifinalist Ben Shelton. Shelton is projected to face Djokovic in a rematch of their semifinal should both reach the second week.
