Can Team World send John McEnroe off with a Laver Cup three-peat in his final year at the helm?

McEnroe revealed Thursday three of the players who will set out to make that happen against the Team Europe-led Bjorn Borg, who is also concluding his role as captain in Berlin.

Australian No. 1 Alex de Minaur joins American besties Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul for another appearance in the men’s team competition at Uber Arena from September 20-22. The trio joins Borg’s earlier announced participants in Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev.

De Minaur and Fritz each won their respective 2022 singles matches during Team World's winning weekend at The O2 Arena.

De Minaur is currently producing the best tennis of his career, a stretch that saw the Sydney native crack the Top 10 for the first time in early January. With his two wins thus far in Monte Carlo this week, De Minaur has raised his 2024 record to 21-6, highlighted by three Top 10 victories at the United Cup that included knocking off world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and a successful Acapulco title defense.

“I’m honored to be back on Captain McEnroe’s team once again,” De Minaur said in a statement.

“We will have a fight on our hands with an impressive roster of Team Europe players so far, but I love the team environment and we will give it everything we’ve got to pull off the win for Team World.”

Two years ago in London, De Minaur helped McEnroe secure his inaugural victory to end Team Europe’s 4-0 start to the event. World No. 13 Fritz has featured on both victorious teams and is making his fourth appearance overall. The 16th-ranked Paul joined his countryman in Vancouver last September a year after serving as the alternate.

“The atmosphere, camaraderie and excitement of the Laver Cup is unlike any other tournament,” declared Paul. “I look forward to taking part in Berlin and hopefully contributing to another team victory.”

Based on competition entry rules, the highest three-ranked players for each team on June 10 following the conclusion of Roland Garros are guaranteed an invitation. Borg and McEnroe have committed to using one or more of their three captains’ picks for any of the six announced players who do not end up fulfilling that criteria.
