John McEnroe tells the Philadelphia Enquirer that he is bothered by the so-called decline in U.S. tennis. McEnroe’s younger brother, Patrick, is the head of USTA Player Development.
“It bothers everyone in the States," he said. "They think it's fine in Europe. They're OK. . . We're used to being spoiled. There was a lot of success, and now we're not getting any. And it's frustrating. There's no doubt about it. That's why I started [the John McEnroe Tennis Academy], because I wanted to get the buzz back in tennis. And I realized that's going to be a long-term project. It's not just going to go snap your fingers, and here we go. You've got to be hungry. Are we hungry enough? There are all sorts of things."
