After his three-set win over No. 23-ranked Andreas Seppi at the Winston-Salem Open, former NCAA champion Steve Johnson, who qualified for the tournament, said that he may have aimed too high when he began playing professionally.
“I think I had expectations, I think they were unrealistic from the success I had in college,” he told reporters. “It’s taken me a year to realize these guys are where they are for a reason.”
Johnson, who is currently ranked No. 121, thinks his game is firming up.
“Hopefully, it’s just another step in the right direction,” he said. “I felt like everything I’ve been kind of working on the last four, five, six months kind of came together.”
Johnson lost in the third round to Yen-Hsun Lu, 6-3, 6-2.
