Karen Khachanov took out No. 3-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round of the Miami Open on Tuesday, 7-6 (4), 6-4, a meaningful victory for the No. 16-ranked Russian for so many reasons.

Most notably, he snapped a 23-match losing streak to Top 10 players.

Khachanov’s last win over a Top 10 player had come against Alexander Zverev at the Masters 1000 event in Canada on August 9th, 2019—three years, seven months and 19 days ago (or a total of 1,327 days).

It was also his first win in seven career meetings against Tsitsipas, having lost all six of their previous encounters, most recently a 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3 defeat in the semis of this year's Australian Open.

“Normally they say third time is a charm, but for me it took seven times,” Khachanov joked about his head-to-head against Tsitsipas.

“I’m super happy, not most importantly that I beat Stefanos, but I think with the way that I’m playing. After Australian Open I had some issue with an injury, and I came back in Dubai without having too many matches the last month. I’m just happy to continue playing that level, and of course to beat Stefanos today, I think I’m just happy the way I’m playing on court, and I just want to continue that way, to enjoy the process, enjoy the journey, and yeah—I hope it continues.”

Also, Khachanov’s victory over the world No. 3 was actually the second-best win of his career in terms of ranking, after beating then-No. 2 Novak Djokovic in the final of the Masters 1000 in Paris in 2018.

Last but certainly not least, it was his 50th career win at a Masters 1000 event. He’s just the seventh player born in 1995 or later to hit that number after Alexander Zverev (103), Tsitsipas (70), Daniil Medvedev (68), Borna Coric (57), Nick Kyrgios (52) and Denis Shapovalov (52).

Khachanov, a former No. 8 who's currently ranked No. 16, is into the quarterfinals of Miami for the first time.
