World No. 2 Petra Kvitova tries to downplay talk about whether she can seize the No. 1 ranking from Caroline Wozniacki. Kvitova is just 115 points behind the Dane and is defending 880 points through the Australian Open, where she reached the quarterfinals last year. The Czech won the title in Brisbane last year, but instead of defending her 200 points, decided to play the Hopman Cup exhibition this week.
Wozniacki, who reached the Aussie Open semis, is defending 900 points in Melbourne. She is also playing in the Hopman Cup. Both women will play Sydney next week; if Kvitova wins the title she'll move up to No. 1.
"Caroline plays great and definitely she can win some Grand Slams," Kvitova told reporters. "I mean the women tennis is really open now so everybody can be high. Last year was four Grand Slam and four winners, so I mean it’s not only about me but all of us. Well its crazy the same kind of questions to ask [about taking No. 1], but I know that for you its important [to] know it. For me it doesn’t matter and I just want to play and have fun on court."
