Ivan Lendl, the coach of Andy Murray, tells the *Daily Telegraph* that over the nine months they've been working together, Murray has become capable of outlasting anyone.
“Andy has been maturing very nicely as a player, as a competitor and as a person,” Lendl said after Murray won his first major with a five set win over Novak Djokovic at the U.S. Open. “The more of these situations you are in, the more comfortable you feel. To me, one of the most important matches of Andy’s year was his loss to Novak in the Australian Open semi-final, because that was a war just like this one. It gave him the belief that he could hang in with these guys. It showed him what it took to win.”
Lendl would not discuss what specific changes he instituted in Murray’s game because “the margins are so small that letting slip any detail that might help somebody else—if just for a couple of points in the match—would be suicidal.”
The stoic eight-time Grand Slam champion said that the reason he did not smile after Murray’s win was because: “It’s overrated. I like jokes. I don’t like smiling too much.”
