Leylah Fernandez reportedly adds coach Julian Alonso to team for 2023

The 2021 US Open finalist currently stands at No. 39 in the WTA rankings.

A Grand Slam finalist will start next season with a new coach.

Leylah Fernandez appears to have brought on former ATP player Julian Alonso as a coach, according to Punto de Break.

The 20-year-old, who reached the final of the 2021 US Open, has not officially been coached by anyone except her father, Jorge, until this point in her career.

Alonso, who is from Spain, will keep coaching Arantxa Rus in addition to Fernandez.

Fernandez will head into the 2023 season ranked No. 39.

Fernandez had an up and down 2022 since breaking through in 2021. She won her second career title at the WTA event in Monterrey, Mexico, and reached the quarterfinals of the French Open.

But she was then sidelined with a foot injury until Toronto, saying she should have withdrawn during Roland Garros rather than playing on. Since returning, Fernandez lacked momentum, going 5-7 for the rest of the year.

It was announced Thursday that she earned Tennis Canada's Player of the Year honors alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime.
