John Isner and Nicholas Mahut have completed the longest match in the history of tennis, with Isner winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-6(3), 70-68 in 11 hours, 5 minutes.
The tournament held a ceremony afterwards to mark the historic match. "I got a little bit tired but you know, when you come out and play a match like this, with an atmosphere like this, you don't feel tired," Isner told the crowd.
Of his opponent, Isner said, "What more can you say? The guys an absolute warrior. It stinks that someone had to lose.
"I wish him all the best... Maybe I'll see him sometime down the road and next time it won't go 70-68."
Isner finally broke to end the epic encounter on his fifth match point, winning the final two points with passing shot winners.
Mahut served to stay in the match 65 times before succumbing. "At this moment, it's just really painful, but as John said it was great to play today," he said.
"John deserved the win, he served unbelievable... He's a champion.
"Wimbledon is the greatest tournament and we played the greatest match ever."
The match was the longest ever recorded, and the fifth set alone was longer than the longest match previously played. Both players broke the record for most aces served, each hitting over a 100.
