Daniil Medvedev came into Wimbledon having never won a main-draw match at a Grand Slam.

The 21-year-old got that monkey off his back on Monday, and in the process pulled off a stunning upset.

The Russian knocked off three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, on Centre Court to advance to the second round at the All England Club.

Wawrinka, the runner-up at last month’s French Open, is ranked third and was seeded fifth. Though grass has always been his weakest surface—he’s never gotten past the quarterfinals here, and was knocked out in the second round last year—the 32-year-old was the heavy favorite against the up-and-comer.

The Swiss’ left knee bothered him during the match. He had it iced during changeovers, but never seemed comfortable on court.

Wawrinka, who lost to eventual champion Feliciano Lopez in his opener at the Aegon Championships in London two weeks ago, has now been ousted in the first round of Wimbledon six times in his career.

Medvedev, unseeded and ranked No. 49, will take on Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans in the second round. Bemelmans defeated 39-year-old wild card Tommy Haas, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, in the German veteran’s final match at Wimbledon.
