After any WTA 1000 event there’s lots of movement on the WTA rankings, and with the China Open wrapping up in Beijing over the weekend, this week's rankings are no exception.

The most notable move comes from 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who rises from No. 22 to No. 19—her Top 20 debut—after reaching the quarterfinals in the Chinese capital. It was her seventh quarterfinal of the year and fourth at the WTA 1000 level or above, having reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at Roland Garros and another two WTA 1000 quarterfinals in Madrid and Cincinnati.

At 17 years and 5 months, Andreeva is the youngest woman to make her Top 20 debut since Nicole Vaidisova did it as a 16-year-old in October 2005, before Andreeva was even born (in April 2007).

For those wondering, Coco Gauff was a slightly older 17-year-old than Andreeva when she first broke into the Top 20 in 2021.

Andreeva first appeared on the rankings in 2022, made her way into the Top 100 and Top 50 in 2023, and has now cracked the Top 20 in 2024.

A little further down there’s another debut for a rising star, as Poland’s Magdalena Frech rises from No. 31 to No. 27, her Top 30 debut, after reaching the fourth round in Beijing. She just made her Top 40 debut three weeks ago after winning the first WTA title of her career at the WTA 500 event in Guadalajara, Mexico, and now she cracks the Top 30 after another deep run at a big event.

There’s one more debut: Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva cracks the Top 100, rising from No. 115 to No. 79 after reaching the first WTA 1000 quarterfinal of her career, where she fell to Gauff in three sets.

The last two women standing in Beijing also make notable moves.

First of all, Gauff, who won the second WTA 1000 title of her career in the Chinese capital, rises from No. 6 to No. 4. It's a return to the Top 5 for her—she dipped out after the US Open, where she fell in the fourth round of her title defense, then fell from No. 3 to No. 6.

And the woman Gauff beat for the title, Karolina Muchova, soars from No. 49 to No. 31 after reaching the second WTA 1000 final of her career. A former No. 8, she's working her way back up the rankings after returning from a nine-month wrist injury lay-off in June.

It’s a big day for another woman who lifted a China Open trophy, as Jasmine Paolini—who won the doubles title alongside her countrywoman, Sara Errani—breaks into the Top 10 on the WTA doubles rankings for the first time, rising from No. 15 to No. 9. With Paolini at No. 6 in singles this week, she’s currently the only player, male or female, to rank in the Top 10 in both singles and doubles.

Errani rises from No. 13 to No. 7 in doubles this week, her first time in the doubles Top 10 since 2015.

And last but certainly not least, there are some meaningful ranking rises for a pair of players who’ve made comebacks from surgery.

Donna Vekic, who reached her previous career-high of No. 19 in 2019 but fell out of the Top 100 in 2021 after having knee surgery, surpasses that career-high this week, rising from No. 20 to No. 18.

And Ajla Tomljanovic, who reached a career-high of No. 32 last April but fell as low as No. 593 last October after missing most of the year with a knee injury, is already back in the Top 100—she rises from No. 107 to No. 86 today after winning the WTA 125K event in Hong Kong.
