Muguruza pulls out of Cincinnati but still wants to play US Open

Garbine Muguruza has withdrawn from the Western & Southern Open with an ankle injury but says she still wants to play the US Open.

The two-time Grand Slam champion said she was withdrawing due to "discomfort in her left ankle," but also indicated she is recovering from the injury.

"I hope I will be able to keep improving and compete at the US Open," she said. "I will work hard so I can be there in a few days."

The warmup event, normally played in Cincinnati, is being held at Flushing Meadows.

Muguruza got off to a good start to the season, reaching the final of the Australian Open. Ranked No. 16, she has never been further than the fourth round at the US Open.

The Spanish No.1 has seven career titles.
