Rafael Nadal has increased his lead in the rankings with his U.S. Open victory and is now essentially assured of holding the No. 1 ranking at the end of the season.

Finalist Novak Djokovic moved back up to No. 2, dropping Roger Federer to No. 3, and semifinalist Mikhail Youzhny is up to No. 9 from No. 14.

But defending champion Juan Martin del Potro has fallen sharply, dropping to No. 30 from No. 10 after being unable to play the event this year. Fernando Gonzalez also took a large drop, going to No. 44 from No. 29.

Quarterfinalists David Ferrer and Stanislas Wawrinka did move up, with Ferrer entering the top ten by displacing Andy Roddick and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Wawrinka returning to the Top 20 from No. 27.
