Sam Querrey reacts to becoming the United States’ top-ranked male player. After 2012 Indian Wells finalist John Isner lost in the opening round, Querrey was guaranteed to overtake his doubles partner in the new rankings.
With his third-round victory over Marinko Matosevic, Querrey will more than likely see his ranking rise to at least No. 20 when the rankings are released on Monday.
“It means a lot. It's a great feeling,” Querrey said. “I feel like I have worked hard to earn it. Everyone seems like they've got their shot with Andy [Roddick] and Mardy [Fish] and James [Blake] and John [Isner], and so I feel like it's my turn now. But those guys are right on my heels and we will keep pushing each other. I know they want it, too. Hopefully we will just keep pushing each other and we can all keep moving up the rankings.”
Querrey, who will play world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the fourth round, added that he doesn't think the recognition means a whole lot, because it's a worldwide sport.
“I think the most important thing is your world ranking,” Querrey said. “I don't feel any different ... Mentally it doesn't feel like a huge change.”
