WATCH: In his season debut, Nick Kyrgios lost to Wu Yibing in the first round in Stuttgart.

Wimbledon will begin Monday without the 2022 runner-up in the men's singles draw. Australia's Nick Kyrgios announced his withdrawal from the grass-court on Sunday, on the eve of the championships, due to a wrist injury.

In a statement released by Wimbledon, Kyrgios revealed that he has a torn ligament in his wrist, which he discovered as a result of tests he underwent as a precaution after experiencing pain in a practice at last week's Mallorca Championships. He withdrew from that tournament before it began.

Twelve months ago, Kyrgios reached his first Grand Slam singles final at the All England Club, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. Kyrgios, seeded No. 30 when the draw came out on Friday, was scheduled to play Belgium's David Goffin in the first round Monday on No. 1 Court, but he'll be replaced in the field by a lucky loser.

In Kyrgios' pre-tournament press conference, which was held earlier Sunday, he acknowledged that there were lingering "question marks" around his fitness.

“I still think there are some question marks,” Kyrgios said. “Obviously, five-set tennis is a completely different beast altogether. I look at my preparations last year coming in, I probably had the most ideal preparation possible. It couldn't be any different this year."

The wrist issue is the latest in a litany of injuries Kyrgios has suffered in 2023. He was forced out of the Australian Open due to a knee problem that necessitated surgery; and missed Roland Garros as a result of a foot injury he suffered in the aftermath of a robbery at his home in Canberra, where a thief stole his car.

After losing in the first round in Stuttgart last month to China's Wu Yibing, his season debut, Kyrgios withdrew from the ATP tournament in Halle in addition to Mallorca.

"I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn't have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon," he added in his statement. "I'll be back, and as always, I appreciate the support from all my fans."
