CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki began play at the Family Circle Cup with a straight-set victory over American Irina Falconi.
Wozniacki needed less than an hour to advance to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 at stadium court in Charleston, S.C.. It was Wozniacki's first clay-court match of the season.
She was seldom pushed by Falconi, a former Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year at Georgia Tech. Wozniacki took a 5-0 lead in the first set. She closed the match by winning the final six games.
Wozniacki reached the finals of this event two years ago, then retired with an ankle injury in her semifinal against Vera Zvonareva in 2010.
