CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki defeated Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-3 to take the Family Circle Cup on Sunday, capturing her third title this season.
Wozniacki finished off a strong week in her first clay-court tournament of the season. She lost only one set, in the quarterfinals to Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, and held off Jelena Jankovic in the semis.
The unseeded Vesnina had no luck breaking Wozniacki's rhythm. The top-seeded Dane broke her opponent to grab a 3-1 lead in the opening set. Vesnina held strong in the second set, but again Wozniacki broke her serve for a 5-3 lead. Minutes later, Wozniacki had claimed the title. She also won at Dubai and Indian Wells, Calif.
Wozniacki earned $111,000 for her first Family Circle Cup crown.
