Not Going Anywhere: Venus Williams hopes to play Olympics in 2020

If you’re expecting Venus Williams to announce her retirement any time soon, don’t hold your breath.

She’s not going anywhere.

“I’m kind of targeting the next Olympics,” Williams, 36, revealed on the Hallmark Channel. “That’s in, what, three-and-a-half years? And I’m not counting. Three years, sixth months, nine days—I don’t know! But I am targeting that to see if it’s possible to play there. I’ve played a long time, so there’s a part of me that says, hey, I should try to get a life outside of the court.

“But while you’re out there playing, I love that challenge. I love the pressure. It’s all a privilege. If I can be out there, I will be.”

The seven-time Grand Slam champion, who turned pro all the way back in 1994, was a guest on “Home and Family.”

Williams will be 40 years old when the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo roll around. A decorated Olympian, she won gold in singles and doubles in Sydney in 2000, gold in doubles in Beijing in 2008, gold in doubles in London in 2012 and silver in mixed doubles in Rio de Janeiro this past summer.

The American went 28-15 in 2016 and won her 49th career title in Taiwan in February. She also won the Wimbledon doubles title—her 14th Grand Slam doubles title—with her sister, Serena. She finished the season ranked 17th in the world.
