Novak Djokovic first title to gold medal

Technically, Novak Djokovic came into the Miami Open with 100 titles: 99 in singles, and one doubles trophy.

But 100 singles titles? Only five players in the Open Era have joined that club, the most recent being Roger Federer.

He can become the sixth today, should be beat Jakub Mensik in a match that begins at 3 p.m. ET, only on Tennis Channel (watch here):

Over nearly 20 years, Djokovic has won his 99 solo awards across four continents, on every playing surface, in every tournament month of the year.

From the Dutch Open to 24 Grand Slams, a gold-medal victory and perhaps a 100th singles title, Djokovic has conquered nearly everything there is over his 22 years on tour:

Spanning The Globe…

Titles by Region

  • Europe: 44
  • North America: 22
  • Australia: 12
  • Asia: 13
  • Middle East: 8
  • South America: 0

In July 2006, Djokovic got his first taste of victory in Amersfoort at the Dutch Open, a clay-court tournament no longer in existence, at a then career-high ranking of No. 36.

By the time he won his second title, later that year in October in Metz, France, he was ranked No. 22.

Djokovic has gone on to win 44 singles titles in Europe alone. Since 2006, the only year he hasn't won a title on the continent was in 2010.

He has conquered plenty of tournaments in Australia, North America, Middle East and Asia over the years. Although 10 out of his 12 titles from Australia were the continent's Slam, his first title won Down Under (and third overall) came in Adelaide, at the start of 2007.

And there's still time to get to South America.

On Every Surface…

Titles by Court

  • Outdoor Hard: 52
  • Clay: 20
  • Indoor Hard: 19
  • Grass: 8

Djokovic has won 52 outdoor hard-court titles: Twelve from Australia, seven from the Middle East and 33 from North America and Asia combined. (All but three titles won from North America and Asia is from an outdoor hard-court tournament.)

His indoor hard-court and clay-court resumes were evenly matched at 19 titles on each surface, until the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where Djokovic broke through on the terre battue with his gold-medal winning performance.

You could say grass is the only surface Djokovic has sparingly won, except that grass is the least-played-upon surface in the world, and that seven of his eight turf titles were from Wimbledon.

Across The Calendar…

Titles by Month

  • January: 14
  • February: 5
  • March: 11
  • April: 5
  • May: 9
  • June: 4
  • July: 8
  • August: 8
  • September: 12
  • October: 9
  • November: 14

Ninety-nine titles aren’t earned with many vacation days. Over the years, Djokovic earned at least four titles from each eligible tournament month of the year. November, January and September are his top-performing months, with Djokovic often saving his best for late in the year.

His 14 titles in November includes seven Paris Masters and seven ATP Finals. January, also at 14 titles, has the Australian Open accounting for the majority (10). The other four titles come from ATP 250 Adelaide and ATP Doha.

Although September is Djokovic's third-most successful month of the year, he has the most variety of tournament wins there. He's won 12 titles in all, including four US Opens, six ATP 500s in Beijing, one ATP 500 in Tokyo—and even one ATP Masters 1000 Rome, during COVID-19.

Djokovic's sole doubles title was lifted in June (2010); his first singles title in the month of June wouldn’t be for another six years, when he lifted the Roland Garros trophy for the first time.

Djokovic's victory over Sinner in the final was also his milestone 50th career win at the ATP Finals.

And Finally…

Titles by Level

  • 12 ATP 250s (4 outdoor hard, 2 indoor hard, 5 red clay, 1 grass)
  • 15 ATP 500s (12 outdoor hard, 3 indoor hard)
  • 40 ATP Masters 1000s (22 outdoor hard, 7 indoor hard, 11 clay)
    • includes 4 Sunshine Doubles, three consecutive
  • 7 ATP Finals
  • 24 Grand Slams
  • 1 Olympic Gold Medal

If Djokovic wins his 100th title in Miami, three months away from the 19-year anniversary of his first ever title, it would be his 23rd North American title and 53rd outdoor hard-court title—not to mention his seventh Miami Masters.

It would also bump his March title count up to 12, tying September for third-best performing month of the year.

Adding another Masters 1000 title to his name would improve his record total to 41—23 coming on outdoor hard courts.
