On top in Turin! Bouyed by a crowd of over 12,000 strong at the Inalpi Arena, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz on Sunday 6-4, 6-4 in the final of the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals.

With a one-hour and 24-minute victory, Sinner joins an exclusive club of men to win the Australian Open, the US Open (where he beat Fritz for the trophy, also in straight sets) and the year-end championships in the same season. Only Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer had done so previously before the 23-year-old stormed through the field on home soil over the last week.

Sinner not only went a clinical 5-0 throughout his week in Turin to tak his first title in his home country: He didn't drop a set, becoming the first man to lift the year-end trophy without losing a set since Ivan Lendl in 1986.

He is also the first player born in the 2000s to capture the trophy at the year-end event, finishing the job to cap his world-beating season after ending as runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the event 12 months ago.

“It’s amazing, it’s my first title in Italy and it means so much to me,” Sinner said post-match. “It’s something very special. I just tried to understand what works best for each opponent, trying to play my best possible tennis. That was the key.

“It was a very high level tournament from my side. At times, I couldn't have played better, so I am very happy.”

The world No. 1 was clinical on serve in his straight-sets victory, his fourth win in five matches against Fritz, and third this year. Overall, he dropped just 13 points in his 10 service games, served 14 aces, and saved the only break point he faced, which came in the last game of the first set.

Ten of Sinner's 14 aces for the match came in the first set, but her served his way out of trouble in the only game in which he was pushed to deuce in the second set, at 4-3. A first-ball forehand winner off of a perfectly-placed first serve gave Sinner an advantage point, and he slammed Fritz's door of opportunity shut with another ace on the subsequent game point. He later served out the match to 15, finishing off victory when Fritz's final forehand went wide.

In all, Sinner finished the match with 28 winners to just 17 unforced errors, and landed more than 70% of his first serves.

Despite falling short of his goal to become the first American to win the year-end title in singles since Pete Sampras in 1999, Fritz is nonetheless guaranteed he will rise to a career-high of No. 4 in the ATP rankings by virtue of his runner-up finish.
