Passport to RG, Day 7—Collins upsets 2016 champ Muguruza; Kenin rolls

After she snagged the first set, Collins faltered and Muguruza began running away with the match. The Spaniard raced to close out the second set, 6-2, and then led 3-0 and 4-2 in the third set, appearing in complete cruise control. Instead of keeping her foot on the pedal, the No. 11 seed let the fiery American back in. Slowly but surely, Collins drew even and would reel off four games in a row to seal her first career appearance in the fourth round of Roland Garros.

She was down a break before rain halted play, but that storyline soon washed away when Danielle Collins returned to resume her battle with Garbine Muguruza. The American won the first three games once the two started back up, and would secure a late break to earn the first set, 7-5. Muguruza went just one for eight on break points, with her last one coming at 4-4.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic rounded out men's third-round action by overwhelming Daniel Elahi Galin, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2, in two hours and eight minutes. Djokovic saved all five break points against his serve and ended his day with a +10 differential in winners to unforced errors. In posting his 71st Roland Garros match win, Djokovic moved into sole position of second place on the all-time men's list, breaking a tie with Roger Federer.

Karen Khachanov, the No. 15 seed, awaits the Serbian in the round of 16. Djokovic leads their head-to-head series 3-1, although the two have never met on clay.

Djokovic is well on his way to the fourth round, expanding his lead over loser Daniel Elahi Galin to 6-0, 6-3. The top seed exercised his voice to encourage organizers to close the roof on Court Philippe-Chatrier after Galan's side of the court became quite slippery in the second set due to increased rain in the area.

The precipitation forced Garbine Muguruza and Danielle Collins to leave Court Suzanne-Lenglen. Muguruza broke in the opening game and was serving at 1-0, 30-0 when play was suspended.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova had her hands fully early, but stayed the course to defeat Canadian Leylah Fernandez, 7-5, 6-3. The Czech was efficient when she came forward, winning 13 of 15 points at the net, and broke the teenager for an eighth time in the final game to lock up the win in one hour and 54 minutes. A semifinalist eight years ago, Kvitova gets Zhang Shuai next.

Meanwhile, two unseeded players will face off for a spot in the quarterfinals. Laura Siegemund first rallied past No. 13 seed Petra Martic, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-0, before Paula Badosa knocked out 2017 titlist Jelena Ostapenko, 6-4, 6-3. Both Siegemund and Badosa advanced to the round of 16 at a major for the first time.

At last year's French Open, Karen Khachanov progressed to his first major quarterfinal, ultimately going down to Dominic Thiem. The 15th seed is delivering the goods once again in Paris, and today, outshined No. 20 seed Cristian Garin, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Khachanov took 48 percent of his return points to break the four-time ATP clay-court titlist eight times.

If Khachanov wants to equal his 2019 showing, he'll likely need to take down world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. The 2016 champion has bolted out to a 6-0 lead on lucky loser Daniel Elahi Galin, winning all 10 points on his first serve.

Yes, yes we do. Jabeur would remark she is 'Team Tsitsipas!"

Since the WTA tour resumed, Fiona Ferro has not lost a match. The Frenchwoman triumphed in Palermo, then did not enter a tournament ahead of arriving at her home major. The break in competition hasn't mattered, as Ferro is into the second week of a Slam for the first time.

Playing on Court Philippe-Chatrier, the 23-year-old regrouped brilliantly from dropping her second set to Patricia Maria Tig, bageling the Romanian in the decider. The final score: 7-6 (7), 4-6, 6-0. Ferro, one of two home favorites to reach the round of 16 (Caroline Garcia), will take on Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin for a quarterfinal berth.

Facing fellow left-hander Leylah Fernandez, two-time major champion Petra Kvitova quickly trailed 1-5. The Czech would face two set points, one in the seventh game and one in the ninth game, though the 18-year-old was unable to seal the deal. As a result, Kvitova surged to win six games in a row for a 7-5 advantage, saving two break points in the last game.

Fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas was putting together a sublime performance on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, racking up 28 winners (to just 11 unforced errors), which included 10 aces and zero double faults. Leading 6-1, 6-2, 3-1, his third-round opponent Aljaz Bedene retired from the match.

The Greek will face a first-time foe in Grigor Dimitrov on Monday. The fellow former ATP Finals champion was also in command before his opponent, Roberto Carballes Baene, also stopped play. Dimitrov led, 6-1, 6-3, and hadn't seen a break point come up against his serve. Both he and Tsitsipas are bidding to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the first time.

At this year's Australian Open, Ons Jabeur became the first Arab woman to contest a major quarterfinal. Does the Tunisian have a deeper run in her at the clay-court Slam?

It's certainly possible, as the 30th-seeded Jabeur fended off No. 8 seed Aryna Sabalenka, 7-6 (7), 2-6, 6-3, improving to 21-9 on the season. Though she went just one for 10 on break points in the decider, Jabeur's early conversion was enough to propel her past the Belarusian after just over two hours. For a place in the last eight, Jabeur will square off against 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza or American Danielle Collins.

In a second set that boasted six consecutive breaks, including lengthy games of 22 and 16 points, Zhang Shuai emerged victorious, 7-6 (2), 7-5, over wild card Clara Burel. After securing her seventh break of the match, Zhang shut the door at love to reach the second week in Paris for the first time.

In his opening set, Stefanos Tsitsipas asserted himself on the baseline to overpower Aljaz Bedene, 6-1. Tsitsipas won 28 points to the Slovenian's 11.

The No. 4 seed began her day down 0-2. Call it a minor blip in an otherwise stellar day.

Sofia Kenin cruised back into the round of 16 for the second year running, blitzing qualifier Irina Bara, 6-2, 6-0. Kenin completed her quick day at the office with 32 winners to 25 unforced errors while saving nine of the 10 break points she faced, including five in the final game.

"I'm really happy with how it went," Kenin told Tennis Channel's Jon Wertheim. "Towards the end, I was like, I kind of want to get to 12-0 games."

Bidding for her second Slam trophy of the year, Kenin will aim to progress to her first Paris quarterfinal against Fiona Ferro or Patricia Maria Tig. If Tig wins, she would be the third straight Romanian Kenin faces.

In a clash of two Spaniards, recent US Open semifinalist Pablo Carreno Busta got the better of No. 10 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, after three hours and 22 minutes. The 17th seed was down 2-4 in the fourth set, before claiming 12 of the final 15 points to get the job done in four.

A quarterfinalist three years ago at the Paris major, Carreno Busta can return to that scene if he gets past German qualifier Daniel Altmaier.

Down a break to start, Australian Open champ Sofia Kenin strings together six successive games against qualifier Irina Bara. Kenin is the one pulling the trigger on Chatrier, ending the 6-2 set with 14 winners (and 18 unforced errors).

Having blown three set points on her serve at 6-5, 40-0, Ons Jabeur found herself down 1-5 in her tiebreaker with Aryna Sabalenka. The No. 30 seed rallied to snatch it back, 7-6 (7), handing eighth-seeded Sabalenka her first dropped set of the event.

Zhang Shuai trailed 19-year-old Clara Burel 3-5 but also rallied to win a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2). Zhang just defeated the world No. 357 11 days ago in Strasbourg.

Off the ATP rankings 20 months ago, Daniel Altmaier is making quite the splash in his first major appearance. After coming through qualifying and later getting the best of countryman Jan-Lennard Struff, Altmaier scored his first Top 10 win by ousting world No. 8 Matteo Berrettini, 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

The 22-year-old German, ranked No. 186, saved six of the seven break points he faced to join fellow qualifier Sebastian Korda and wild card Hugo Gaston in week two. Altmaier, who is yet to drop a set in the main draw, awaits Pablo Carreno Busta or Roberto Bautista Agut.

A five-set comeback to start, a four-set win in the second round and now, a straight-set victory for Andrey Rublev. Seeded No. 13, the 22-year-old finishes off Kevin Anderson, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, winning 29 of 33 first-serve points. Rublev, who saw Sam Querrey serve for a three-set win in his opener, will be favored to get through in the round of 16 when he meets the winner of Marton Fucsovics and Thiago Montero.

Seventh seed Matteo Berrettini served for the second set against Daniel Altmaier at 5-4, but couldn't get it done. The German qualifier would make the most of new life in the set, edging Berrettini in a tiebreaker to take a two-set lead. The Italian has rallied from two sets down once in his career (2018 Wimbledon first round vs. Jack Sock).

Two-time US Open semifinalist Pablo Carreno Busta is also in command, up, 6-4, 6-3, on compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut. The winner of this clash meets the winner of Altmaier and Berrettini.

Rublev is yet to face a break point through two sets with Anderson, jumping out to a 6-3, 6-2 advantage. The No. 13 seed stands at 16 winners and 11 unforced errors heading into the third, while Anderson is in the red, with 14 winners and 22 unforced. The South African commented, "the court's really slick." shortly before losing set two.

In an all-Spanish affair, No. 17 seed Pablo Carreno Busta claimed the first set, 6-4, against No. 10 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, who is aiming to snap a 17-match losing streak when facing Top 20 opponents on clay.

Seventh seed Matteo Berrettini was outplayed in the first set by 186th-ranked qualifier Daniel Altmaier. The German, playing his first major, broke twice from four opportunities to move out in front, 6-2.

Last week's Hamburg champion Rublev took 20 of his 24 service points to grab his first set, 6-3, over two-time major finalist Anderson. These two are meeting for the first time since the 2015 US Open first round, when Anderson advanced in four sets.

Nine unseeded players reached the second week on Friday. How many more will advance?

Of the 16 singles matches on Saturday's schedule, just three feature the seeds projected to meet in the third round. Those respective matches include two on the men's side—No. 10 seed Roberto Bautista Agut versus No. 17 seed Pablo Carreno Busta and No. 15 seed Karen Khachanov versus No. 20 seed Cristian Garin—and one women's clash, No. 8 seed Aryna Sabalenka versus No. 30 seed Ons Jabeur.

Five major champions will take the court, anchored by world No. 1 Novak Djokovic closing out play on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The 17-time Slam title holder looks to break a tie with Roger Federer for the second most men's singles wins at Roland Garros by seeking his 71st match win against lucky loser Daniel Elahi Galan.

Fellow 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin is also on Chatrier, facing Irina Bara. Two-time Wimbledon titlist Petra Kvitova meets 18-year-old Leylah Fernandez in an all-lefty encounter, while Garbine Muguruza, who won her first of two majors here four years ago, battles Danielle Collins. The woman who succeeded Muguruza in the Paris winner's circle, Jelena Ostapenko, squares off against Paula Badosa.
