Think Peng Shuai’s win over Agnieszka Radwanska meant something to her? This wasn’t even match point.

Aga looked concerned as she hit this forehand. She was right to be. After another loss at the Open, she was asked what it was about Flushing Meadows that didn’t suit her game. “I’d really like to know the answer,” she said.

Fans crammed into the shade above the Grandstand to get a view of Jelena Jankovic vs. Tsvetana Pironkova.

JJ was smooth in victory...

...but she had her moments, of course.

The Grandstand offers easy access for autograph hounds.

Tempers flared on this humid day, especially Andrea Petkovic’s on Court 11

But her labors were rewarded in the end.

Petko’s opponent, Monica Puig, looks into the light. She let a third-set lead slip and lost in a deciding tiebreaker.

The fans on Court 11 were into it. They followed the ball this way...

...and that.

And clapped for both women when it was over.

It was a stink-eye kind of day for Maria Sharapova.

Was she offering a prayer with the tiny cross on her back? It was eventually answered.

Things went more smoothly for Sharapova’s boyfriend, Grigor Dimitrov, on the next court, where he dismissed Ryan Harrison in straight sets.

But no tennis match is perfect.

Harrison stopped afterward to put his scrawl on a hat—just before it was snatched back.

Venus Williams, a winner in two sets, was all smiles at the end of the day.
