The ushers stood ready, but the crowds wouldn’t descend on the All England Club for another 24 hours.

Inside, Wimbledon’s very official-looking security guards gathered for their traditional first Sunday pep talk on Centre Court.

On the last day before the Championships, the players are limited to a few practice courts at the back of the grounds. It was a mad scramble for space on Sunday; Ernests Gulbis and Alison Riske found themselves within a few feet of each other as they returned serve.

Is Goran Ivanesivic about to stamp an L on his forehead as he scolds his charge, Marin Cilic? We’ll see if his tough love pays off when Cilic faces Paul-Henri Mathieu on Monday.

Was Heather Watson a piano player before she took up tennis? The young Brit—”Hev” to her British fans—will feel the pressure of expectations this week.

I don’t think any coach would tell you to play peek-a-boo with your opponent on your follow-through, but it seems to work for top doubles player Peng Shuai.

Last month, Taylor Townsend said, with a laugh, that she would “pass out” if she had a chance to play Wimbledon this year. She got her wish, but she wasn’t in a laughing mood on the grounds today.
