His former roommate, Mardy Fish, is engaged to be married in September and now it's also game, set, and love match for Andy Roddick.
Roddick, now 25, popped the question to his girlfriend of seven months, Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker, 20. Roddick’s previous high-profile relationships were with actress/singer Mandy Moore and Elite model, Lauren Bedford.
The news was confirmed on Roddick’s official website.
“Andy proposed in early March. The couple wanted to tell their family and close friends first but good news travels fast,” said an announcement on AndyRoddick.com.
“By the time Andy arrived in Miami for the Sony Ericsson Open, the tournament was bustling with the news. With their hectic travel schedules, Andy and Brooklyn plan to enjoy their engagement and will wait to set a wedding date.”
Decker, an Ohio native, shares midwestern roots with Nebraka-born Roddick, as well as experience living life in front of the cameras. She posed for last year’s SI Swimsuit Issue in cowgirl attire on location in Arizona. Decker has also modeled for Victoria’s Secret and The Gap.
The couple met in New York City last year. Decker was also on hand when the United States Davis Cup team won the trophy in Portland last December and accompanied Roddick to his pre-Australian Open getaway in Hawaii. The two have since been photographed out together on several occasions.
No wedding date has been set, but most players favor the off-season for tying the knot.
Roddick Comments
Andy Roddick fended off questions on his engagement after defeating Ivo Minar in the third round of Miami. "I got down on a knee, but I think the details we'll keep close to our family and friends," he said.
"I think I lost half my fan base today," he joked, wryly adding, "But you know, I'm happy, and Ivo Minar played the same way. I don't think he really cared."
Asked if fiancée Brookyln Decker is ready to handle any extra attention that might follow, Roddick said, "She's a very, very smart girl, so I think so. But to be honest, I think it's big news today. I don't know if it will be big news next week."
Pressed further, he headed off queries with "Guys, let's get to tennis, please."
Roddick was a little more forthcoming for his fans online, giving a few extra details in a written note:
"i have to admit all the attention in a bit suprising. we have been laughing at some of the stuff we have seen. supposedly she is pregnant and i didnt bother to tell my friends and family about the engagement... ha ha... i mean really? truth is, it happened two weeks ago after indian wells. i was planning on doing it in april during some off time, but had the ring and couldn't wait!! my mom knew i was going to do it for a couple months before and couldnt be happier."
