Sam Querrey has defeated Andy Roddick 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 to reach the Memphis semifinals.
In his first service game of the third set, Roddick was up 40-15 before losing four points in a row, the last on a double fault. He broke his racquet in frustration and did not win another game.
"I'll take it. When that rare opportunity comes that he's going to throw in a double fault, you've just to take advantage of it," said Querrey. ''I thought I did a good job there and kept the momentum going. I played an unbelievable third set."
After losing their first five meetings, Querrey has now won two of his last three matches against Roddick. He defeated the older American in Cincinnati last summer and only narrowly lost their encounter in San Jose last week. In San Jose, Querrey did not face a break point and was two points away from a win before dropping a third-set tiebreak.
"Last week it was the opposite. He was winning play from the baseline and playing well and I ended up sneaking one out," Roddick said. "[Today] I had the better end of the first two sets and we were even."
