Every year at the Australian Open, Aussies hope to become the first from their home country in roughly 50 years to win the tournament. And every year, dreams are crushed. For the 2021 Australian Open, only one Aussie remains in either the men's or women's draw: Ashleigh Barty.

Before the Open era began in 1968, Aussies were dominant on their home turf with an Aussie male winning 46 times between 1905-1968, and an Aussie woman raising the trophy 33 times from 1922-1968.

Barty came close to reaching the final of the major in 2020, but couldn't break through like her counterparts in the pre-Open era and 1970s. Evonne Goolagong and Margaret Court won the title four times each between 1969 and 1977. The Aussie male dominance also continued at the start of the Open era with Rod Laver winning in 1969, Ken Rosewall winning twice (1971 and '72) and John Newcombe winning in 1973 and '75.
